Sam Altman Reveals: India Is Now ChatGPT’s Biggest Market in Asia


India is set to host the Global AI Summit 2026 starting Monday. Ahead of the summit, Sam Altman has released new figures. The OpenAI CEO is arriving in India to participate in the event. OpenAI’s ChatGPT has made many complex tasks significantly easier, and millions of people use it every day. ChatGPT is now being widely used among Indian users as well. According to a TOI report, Sam Altman stated that India has now become the largest user market for ChatGPT in Asia.

Altman revealed that more than 100 million people in India — over 10 crore users — use ChatGPT every week. With such a massive user base, India has become the world’s second-largest market after the United States.



India Once Called ‘Hopeless

It is worth noting that there was a time when India was described as “hopeless” in the context of AI. However, the situation has completely changed. The rapid expansion of internet access, fast adoption of digital technologies, and India’s large youth population have turned the country into a major market for AI companies.


Sam Altman to Attend AI Summit

The Global AI Summit 2026 will begin in India on Monday. Sam Altman shared these statistics just before the summit. He is expected to arrive in Delhi to take part in the event, which will see the participation of technology leaders from around the world.

Reports suggest that OpenAI has around 800 million weekly users globally, with approximately 100 million users coming from India alone.

The figures shared by the OpenAI CEO indicate that India is no longer just an observer in the AI landscape but is emerging as a strong and influential player. While the AI race is often associated with the United States and China, India is steadily building its own distinct and powerful presence.
